Who is Captain Gabe? Photos from the PIG concert with Julien K, and Ghostfeeder in Albuquerque, NM. July 5th 2017
This was an incredible heartwarming show and I can say that I’ve finally gotten around to putting together the photos for display. I have been reluctant to touch this work because I had found out a very delicate family matter that had generated a lot of stress, thankfully all turned out good in the end. Because of that, I have a beautiful connection to this band, in more ways than one they’ve helped me through some stressful times, their music passion and kindness is on display here and I hope that my photos have helped capture some of the energy they have on the stage. Family time is important, cherish your loved ones.
Leading up to PIG was the amazing Julien K, just as fun and beautiful as I had imagined.

Ghostfeeder helped open the charge with their own unique style and sound.

Albuquerque Locals, Tripping Dogs

Daily ramblings and a few ideas for the music industry.

Kreator live at the El Rey in Albuquerque, New Mexico.
I have decided that I want to write more for this blog that I’ve started, not simply because it needs more content but because I need an outlet, there’s many challenges in being a concert photographer under the age of 30 living in a small city such as Albuquerque. Big shows, sponsorship and even publicist (who have all the best intentions in the world, seriously I love the publicist I’ve worked with) pass you by, and publications often ignore your work outright because you can’t reach the views they’re looking for. Your posts are often only liked by the bands themselves and your close friends, but you know what? That’s ok, being small allows me to be creative and push photographic boundaries in the heavy metal scene and be more creative. Often, I get to spend a full evening talking and chilling with bands, getting to know them personally building a friendship, which at a big concert would be nigh impossible. Go in, take your photos and get out. For me, part of the fun of concert photography is getting to photograph the whole, and the parts of the whole that make concerts a theatrical experience as well as a musical one.
I once wrote something similar, in a closed Facebook group and was begrudgingly told that the best way to become popular was to put myself out there, true, I was also told to be controversial because nothing travels farther than controversy. I refuse to believe that being controversial means anything in this business other than a means towards making more money, and although this may be hypocritical the following is from the heart. The music industry needs more talent. It needs folks who can sing beyond putting their voice up to an overly electronic beat that covers up any dynamics they might have and I say this actually really liking certain forms of EDM(so no it’s not a ding on EDM, just overly manufactured music)). The music industry needs to take risks, be innovative and promote a culture that values creative insight and future vision. The music industry doesn’t need to be controversial, it needs to be forward thinking. I love the music industry, but lately the music industry is not acting as an incubator of creative talent.
I fear that the music industry isn’t looking for talent only acquiring already successful talent. We have lost so many great musicians from a great era of music and now, nearly everything is a manufactured rise to fame. Take the time, find the talent, promote that talent help that talent thrive, send that talent to a university or if they want, just put em up in a recording studio for a year or two before they produce anything. Let them play, let them get used to creating, not the fame. Help creators create. If even one music industry executive reads this I hope they’re following through on this, and I hope it’s getting better.

The Insanity of Hemlock, photos from a concert that absolutely destroyed.
This isn’t really a review, but if you’ve never seen Hemlock before you owe it to yourself to witness them live. I’ve seen hundreds of bands, seen them come and go and rarely do I encounter a group as wacky as this one. You will have a good time going to a Hemlock concert.

Insatia! A true gem in the next generation of power metal!(Album Review)

PHOENIX AFLAME DROPPING JUNE 23rd!!!
Nothing short of breathtaking is how’d I’d describe this album, buy it and enjoy it. This is especially true if you’re a fan of power metal with symphonic influences. From the very first track to the last track it’s a breath of fresh air, and not just in music but in the genre, they’re unique with their solo’s and direction, they really want you to hear the power of Zoë Federoff’s awe inspiring voice who’s now quickly on my short list of incredible vocalists. I was first reminded of Epica, Nightwish and Kamelot when I heard this album. It’s all there, glowing as a tribute and shining with uniqueness to evolve the genre forward, and that is what makes it amazing.
Insatia is technically adept, I believe this band is excellent at what they do. They must have sat down around a camp fire in the wilderness, and like Nightwish before them, came up with something incredible and powerful. That’s all speculation of course, but these folks are seriously good and it’s not speculation that what they’ve created is a true master piece of the genre. The vocals shine, Zoë hits every note with ease and care, she doesn’t over use her voice and controls everything. She’s a perfectionist. The rest of the band is equally amazing. Heavy bass that wants you to know it’s there beaming with confidence, perfectly mixed in guitar rounded by the steady beat of a first-rate drummer that’s required for power metal. This group has all the perfect markings of an arena band that is set out to change the world.
I have very little to complain about on this album the line “Welcome back to the land of the living” is a little off putting in the intro (I suspect it will be better live) as it creates an unnecessary transition, but really that’s the only minor thing I could think of, it’s perhaps one of the best recorded and sung albums I’ve heard in recent and distant memory. Even with a talented producer onboard, in this case Fabio D’Amore it takes a great band to work with a great producer. From the start, you’re brought into Insatia’s world of magic, and art. One that speaks, breaths and lives. This is no more evident than in the incredible tracks “We Are The Gray”, “Not My God” and “Velvet Road” which truly show levels of production and dedication that match the bands Insatia is inspired by. I have incredibly high hopes for this group, and I suspect their success will bring them many happy memories, just as this album has brought me. It’s incredible and you should buy it when it drops June 23rd.

Doyle does Horror right! “Doyle II: As We Die” initial review! Album out now!

Album out Now!!!
Doyle’s new album hits you so hard it’ll throw you off your seat! He get’s everything right in it, solid from the sound, atmosphere and lyrics. My most favorite song off the album is “Dark Gods Arise”. I feel like, this is a spiritual tribute to Iron Maiden’s The Number of the Beast and the rest of the horror genre, much like the album itself.
What Doyle does tell is a horror story as Doyle would have it, brutal, evil, twisted, and dark. This album, is all about the evil’s of man, the evil’s of society, and evil in general. It’s a monster of an album, so to speak and a great success. One thing I really like most about the album is it’s simplicity and the beauty in its raw energy and power. It keeps you engaged and interested through its twisted story.
There are no slow songs on this album, if you could ever call “Witchcraft” and “We Belong Dead” slow they might qualify, but certainly fit with the rest of the album . It starts and finishes with heavy. I implore all of you to listen to this album, and for the lazy who don’t want to pick up the album in-store you can find it on Spotify and iTunes. You owe it to yourself to check out this album.
Doyle, congratulations on a triumphant album. It’s fantastic.
Wait! Before you go check out this incredible video! DOYLE: ‘Run For Your Life’ [OFFICIAL MUSIC VIDEO]
